Fossato di Vico

Province: Perugia · Region: Umbria · Population: 2,817 · Postal code: 06022

On the Via Flaminia, 124 miles from Rome, stood Helvillum: the mansio where you changed horses, ate and slept. Alaric's Goths wrecked it in 410, on their way to besiege Rome, and it probably vanished for good in 552, in the battle where Totila died.

In its place grew a settlement with a Byzantine name, Fossaton, meaning fortification; the di Vico was added in 1862, in memory of the Lombard count Vicco. In 1386 it became a free comune and gave itself the Statuta, which lasted into the nineteenth century. Near Collina di Purello stands a milestone with the Templar cross and the year 1173. The 2,817 residents live inside the Monte Cucco park.
