Pietralunga

Province: Perugia · Region: Umbria · Population: 2,182 · Postal code: 06026

In the archaeological museum of Perugia there is a flute made from a human shin bone: it comes from here, from the prehistory of Pietralunga. The Umbrians called the place Tufi; the Romans made it the municipium of Forum Julii Concupiensium, which Pliny names in his Natural History.

On 30 April 1944 the San Faustino partisan brigade took the barracks and declared Pietralunga a free zone, putting back the mayor the fascists had driven out in 1921: May Day was celebrated after twenty-three years. A week later, on 7 May, the German round-up ended with seven young men shot in the main square. The 2,182 residents hold the bronze medal for military valour.
