Castel Giorgio

Province: Terni · Region: Umbria · Population: 2,178 · Postal code: 05013

On the Alfina plateau, in a town of 2,178 residents, stands the Vince Lombardi stadium: mayor Giuseppe Calistri had it built in 1970, and it is the first ground designed for American football in Italy and in Europe.

The town was founded in 1477 at the wish of Giorgio della Rovere, bishop of Orvieto, who brought farming families from the Parma area to settle an uninhabited stretch of land. His castle was destroyed by wars and earthquakes; cardinal Sannesio had it rebuilt in 1620 as a summer residence for the prelates of Orvieto. The fountain in the square dates from 1912, and its water was pushed uphill by a hydraulic ram.

Saint Pancras and the May Tree, a twenty-metre pole climbed for its gifts

📅 Every year, on 11 and 12 May, with the ancient May Tree tradition

Castel Giorgio celebrates Saint Pancras on 11 and 12 May with the ancient May Tree tradition: a wooden pole about twenty metres tall, stripped of its bark, is raised on 11 May, and the next day people climb it to win the gifts placed at its top.
