Castel Viscardo

Province: Terni · Region: Umbria · Population: 3,028 · Postal code: 05014

The parish church holds two objects that came from far away: an ivory crucifix of the seventeenth century, given by Louis XIV to a Spada cardinal living in Paris, and an Ottoman standard, taken from the Turks by Francesco Spada, an officer in Venetian service.

The Spada held the town in fief after the Monaldeschi della Cervara, who had built the castle in the fourteenth century: it is called Castello di Madonna and still belongs to the dukes of Montevecchio. Long before all that, a few kilometres away at Caldane, there was an Etruscan necropolis of the sixth century BC. The 3,028 residents live on the Alfina plateau, looking out over the Paglia valley.
