Porano

Province: Terni · Region: Umbria · Population: 1,989 · Postal code: 05010

In June 1723 the Gualterio family hosted James III of England in their villa: a plaque on the back of the building records it. Cardinal Filippo Antonio Gualterio had close ties with the British royal house, and the villa, where prelates retreated in summer, was known as the villa of the seven cardinals.

Outside the town lie the Etruscan tombs of the Golini and the Hescana. In 1874 senator Gualterio, one of the leading figures of the Risorgimento, had to sell the estate: politics had cost him too much. Today the villa belongs to the national research council and is called Villa Paolina. The 1,989 residents live on a plateau six kilometres from Orvieto, inside medieval walls.
