Attigliano

Province: Terni · Region: Umbria · Population: 1,917 · Postal code: 05012

On the bell tower of piazza della Rocca there is a clock with a single hand and a twelve-hour face: it marks time the way it was marked before minutes began to matter.

In the middle of the main square stands the dolphin fountain, built by Ramperti da Amelia in 1885 with stone from the old Santa Eugenia quarry: it also served for drawing water. The town changed hands constantly, between Todi, the Holy See, Amelia and Bartolomeo d'Alviano, until in 1540 it was ceded to Paul III Farnese; a hundred and four years later the Farnese sold it, and in 1840 prince Borghese bought it. Today it has 1,917 residents, on the bank of the Tiber.
