Feast of Saint Firmina
📅 Every year, on 24 November
On 24 November Amelia celebrates Saint Firmina: in the cathedral the mayors of the whole district offer candles, and through the streets goes a procession recalling the statutes of 1346.
Cato, quoted by Pliny, wrote that the city had been restored 963 years before the war against Perseus of Macedon: that is, in 1134 BC. The date cannot be taken literally, but it shows how ancient Ameria was already held to be in Roman times.
The polygonal walls of the fourth and third centuries BC still ring almost two kilometres of the town, and under piazza Matteotti lies a Roman cistern of ten chambers. The archaeological museum holds the bronze statue of Germanicus, one of the very few left in the world. On 25 January 1944 a bomb hit the primary school: seventeen people died, twelve of them little girls. Today the 11,781 residents live in the Amerini hills, on the border with Lazio.
