Ferentillo

Province: Terni · Region: Umbria · Population: 1,963 · Postal code: 05034

For almost two centuries Ferentillo was a state of its own: in 1484 Innocent VIII made it a fief for his son Franceschetto Cybo, and in 1563 Alberico Cybo Malaspina gave it statutes of its own, independent of Spoleto and of the Church. It ended in 1730, when Alderano Cybo sold it.

The town of 1,963 residents is split in two by the Nera, Matterella and Precetto, with a fortress on each side. Under the church of Santo Stefano lies a crypt as long as the building, used for years as the cemetery: today it is the museum of the mummies. A little further up, at Macenano, stands the abbey of San Pietro in Valle, founded by the Lombard duke Faroaldo II in 720, with the oldest frescoes in Umbria.
