Lorenzago di Cadore

Province: Belluno · Region: Veneto · Population: 567 · Postal code: 32040

Lorenzago di Cadore stands at 883 metres on a well-exposed upland, on the left bank of the Piave, and is one of the twenty-two comuni that make up the Magnifica Comunità di Cadore. The village has no hamlets but two historic quarters, Villagrande and Villapiccola, and the main road that runs through it climbs to the Mauria pass, which lies entirely within the municipal territory and is the gateway between the Cadore and the Carnia. From that ridge the comune sends its water in two directions: most of it ends in the Piave, but on the eastern side of Monte Miaron, within this same territory, the Tagliamento rises.

The mountains around the village — the Cridola, the Miaron — belong to the Dolomites beyond the Piave and the Friulian Dolomites, which since 2009 have been world heritage. But what has made Lorenzago known throughout Italy is a habit: for several years John Paul II spent his summer holidays here, coming up to walk in the mountains, and in 2007 Benedict XVI too came on holiday. A village of a few hundred people that for a few weeks a year became the place from which the pope looked at the Dolomites.
