Vigo di Cadore

Province: Belluno · Region: Veneto · Population: 1,499 · Postal code: 32040

On the nineteenth of July 1509, while the war of the League of Cambrai was passing through the Cadore, the village made a vow for having escaped sack; three years later the church of the Madonna della Difesa was standing. In the church of Sant'Orsola there are fourteenth-century frescoes, and since 2008 a bone of the saint sent by the archbishop of Cologne.

The coat of arms is halved: above is the emblem of the Magnifica Comunità di Cadore, below a pen and a sword crossed. The pen stands for the men of science and letters born here; the sword for the fourteenth of August 1866, when at Treponti the Italians got the better of an Austrian column. Until 1930 the village was called simply Vigo.
