Pedavena

Province: Belluno · Region: Veneto · Population: 4,429 · Postal code: 32034

Nothing is left of the medieval castle. After the destruction of the War of the League of Cambrai and the recovery of nearby Feltre, Pedavena became the place where the town's nobility came to enjoy itself: between the seventeenth and the nineteenth centuries it filled up with villas, and the largest is the seventeenth-century villa Pasole-Berton, with its park and its farm buildings, a short walk from the old town hall. From here, too, came Ana Rech, who in 1878 emigrated to Brazil with her seven children and gave her name to a district of Caxias do Sul.

Its fame, though, the village owes to beer. The Luciani brothers, from Forno di Canale, had a brewery up in the mountains and moved it down here because up there the roads led nowhere: the plant began producing in 1897. In 1917, after Caporetto, it found itself on Austro-Hungarian territory and was requisitioned by the army; by 1920 it was already the second-largest brewery in Italy by output. When Heineken announced its closure in 2004, the village collected tens of thousands of signatures and refused to give in: the factory reopened in January 2006, sold to the Birra Castello of Udine.
