Cesiomaggiore

Province: Belluno · Region: Veneto · Population: 4,145 · Postal code: 32030

The municipal coat of arms is an actual stone: a monumental cippus of AD 47 recording the building of the via Claudia Augusta Altinate, the road that linked Altinum on the Adriatic to Augusta Vindelicum, today's Augsburg, beyond the Alps. The stone is built into an altar beside the church of Santa Maria Maggiore, and it has become the heraldic symbol of the village. The name is Roman too: it comes from the gens Caesia, whose presence here is attested by an inscription.

The full name, though, was born of a clerical problem: when the Veneto passed to the Kingdom of Italy in 1866, the village had to be told apart from another Cesio already in the kingdom, and the comune became Cesiomaggiore — but its main settlement is still called Cesio. In 1404 it was a man from Cesio, Vittore Muffoni, who handed the keys of Feltre to the Venetian ambassador, a gesture still re-enacted in the Palio di Feltre. The year 1917 is remembered here as l'an de la fam, the year of hunger, for the privations suffered under Austrian occupation.
