Seren del Grappa

Province: Belluno · Region: Veneto · Population: 2,557 · Postal code: 32030

Until 1923 this village was called simply Seren. The second half of the name is not geography, it is a recognition: «del Grappa» was added for the courage shown by the population and in memory of what it had suffered, because during the First World War the front ran through here. On Monte Grappa, which closes the municipal territory to the south, the Italian and Austrian armies fought for a long time: it was the last bulwark defending the Venetian plain, and if the Grappa gave way, everything else gave way with it. A village, in short, that carries the name of the mountain on which the fate of half the Veneto was decided.

It did not end there. In the Second World War too Seren del Grappa paid dearly, in damage and in the suffering of its people, and for the partisan struggle it received the war cross for military valour. The coat of arms, granted by decree of the President of the Republic on 14 March 1979, sets on a blue field a bunch of grapes with two vine leaves above a mountain with three peaks: the vine of the valley and the mountain above it, and anyone looking at it hears for himself the echo between grappolo and Grappa. The comune lies between the Feltre country and the massif, and borders among others Feltre, Fonzaso, Arsiè and Pieve del Grappa — which, like it, carries that name inside its own.
