San Nicolò di Comelico

Province: Belluno · Region: Veneto · Population: 405 · Postal code: 32040

San Nicolò stands in the Comelico, at the far north of the Veneto, and it borders Austria directly: on the other side of the watershed lie the Tyrolean municipalities of Kartitsch and Obertilliach. In Ladin the village has two names, San Colò and San Nuclò.

The church of San Nicolò dates from the twelfth century and holds frescoes by Gianfrancesco da Tolmezzo, a Friulian painter of the fifteenth century and one of the founders of the Tolmezzo school, who left work in a dozen villages across Carnia and Friuli. The municipal arms, granted in 2011, put two things side by side: the historic emblem of the Cadore and a golden bishop's crozier, for Saint Nicholas of Bari, the patron.
