Feast of Saint Peter the Apostle and Saint Lucy
📅 Every year, on 13 December
On 13 December San Pietro di Cadore celebrates its patrons Saint Peter the Apostle and Saint Lucy, both honoured on the same day.
The Poli were notaries and timber merchants, and out of timber they made so much money that in 1663 they paid the Serenissima more than a hundred thousand ducats to have themselves written into the Venetian nobility. Two years later they began the palace, with a façade attributed to Baldassarre Longhena: it is the most successful transplant into the Cadore of the villa architecture of the plain. Today the town hall is in it.
The village was called San Pietro until 1868, then San Pietro Cadore, and only in 1957 did it put the «di» in the middle; in the Middle Ages it was Oltrerino, from the torrent Rin that marked the boundary. At Salafossa, from 1959 to 1986, they mined zinc, a quarter of all that Italy produced, and lead: about two hundred and fifty people worked there, and it was the chief income of the lower Comelico.
