Sappada

Province: Udine · Region: Friuli Venezia Giulia · Population: 1,306 · Postal code: 33012

In 1852 the two hundred and sixty-three heads of household of Sappada were asked whether they wanted to move to the province of Belluno: they voted yes, unanimously. A century and a half later they changed their minds, and with the referendum of 2008 they asked for Friuli: the transfer came in 2017, but the village remains part of the Magnifica Comunità di Cadore.

Here they speak plodarisch, a mountain German that came from the Puster valley; and it was because of the dialect that, after Caporetto, the people of Sappada were suspected of Austrian sympathies and evacuated: the municipality had its seat at Arezzo from 1917 to 1919, and in 2017 the two towns were twinned. In the coat of arms there is a miner at work, as has been the custom since 1890: the king granted another one, with mattocks, and the municipality went on using its own.
