Soverzene

Province: Belluno · Region: Veneto · Population: 418 · Postal code: 32010

Soverzene is one of the smallest municipalities in the Veneto, and beneath it, inside the mountain, there is a hydroelectric plant: designed in 1939, begun in 1942 and halted by the war, it was, when finished, the largest underground power station in Europe. The water comes down a penstock from the lake of the Val Gallina, a reservoir at the end of a narrow valley reached by a winding road that lets one vehicle through at a time.

The village suffered for centuries from being cut off, which ended only with the bridge over the Piave in 1929. Today the families are few and so are the surnames: only four are widespread in the whole village. The nursery and primary schools closed in the early nineteen-nineties, and the post office and the town hall moved into their two buildings. In the arms, below the lion of Saint Mark, there is a wooden mill.
