Ponte nelle Alpi

Province: Belluno · Region: Veneto · Population: 8,387 · Postal code: 32014

The town is called Ponte, bridge, and the bridge is the thing that has been destroyed most often. Recorded from 1181, in 1412 it was the Venetians who pulled it down, to stop the Hungarians coming south; rebuilt in 1415, burnt in 1484, and then torn down and raised again five times over the two following centuries. Everyone crossed the Piave here, and that is why nobody left it alone.

Three castles watched over the three valleys that meet here: San Giorgio near Soccher, founded in the sixth century, the Casamatta on Lake Santa Croce and the Castellet north of Polpet. In a villa in the Oltrerai, Mauro Cappellari spent his youth, the man who would become Pope Gregory XVI. The town hall, though, is not in Ponte: it is in the hamlet of Cadola.
