Feast of Saint Joseph
📅 Every year, on 19 March
On 19 March Chies d'Alpago celebrates its patron Saint Joseph, to whom the town's church is dedicated; the town has the Museo di Storia Naturale dell'Alpago.
In November 2009 twenty-five yaks brought from the East were released at the foot of the Cansiglio: they eat the saplings that sheep and cows leave alone, clear the undergrowth and keep fires away, and meanwhile they draw the eye. The wood here is advancing over meadows that post-war emigration emptied: in a few years the municipality lost half its people.
The Tessina landslide has been moving since the sixties and has filled part of the valley; to slow it down a tunnel was dug inside Monte Teverone to drain the water before it feeds the flow, and that water now turns the municipal hydroelectric plants. In the coat of arms, granted in 1941, are the tower of Endrighetto di Bongaio, count of Alpago from 1324, and a sheep.
