Galzignano Terme

Province: Padua · Region: Veneto · Population: 4,416 · Postal code: 35030

The border ran through here, and the Romans had written it on stone: a boundary marker found in the village, dated 141 BC, showed where the territory of Este ended and the Paduan countryside began. The name appears for the first time in February 952, when the emperor Otto I confirmed to the chapter of Padua cathedral three mansiones at Galzignano; it probably comes from a Gallicinus who held land here. The word Terme, on the other hand, is very recent: the inhabitants chose it by referendum on 6 May 1979.

At the foot of the hills, though, the land was marsh. From the middle of the sixteenth century Venetian families bought it, drained it and built their houses on top: that is how Galzignano filled up with villas, and how the garden of villa Barbarigo came into being at Valsanzibio. On Monte Venda, meanwhile, a monastery founded in 1160 and handed to the Benedictines in 1229 lasted until 1771, when Venice suppressed it. When the comune gave itself a coat of arms in 1984, it made the field silver precisely for the abundance of its water, the thermal water above all: the old marsh, read back as good fortune.
