Arzergrande

Province: Padua · Region: Veneto · Population: 4,682 · Postal code: 35020

Arzergrande has 4,682 inhabitants in the Saccisica, and the name is one single thing: the embankment. One of the branches by which the Medoacus — the Brenta — once reached the sea passed this way, and the village grew up around its dyke; even today the provincial road that crosses the territory from west to east runs raised above the fields, and you can see that it is an embankment. Before the Romans this was the land of the Eneti, the ancient Veneti, and it was to the Veneti that Caesar granted Roman citizenship in 49 before Christ, with the lex Roscia.

The hamlet of Vallonga was an important place: the via Popilia ran through it, opened in 132 before Christ to join Adria to Aquileia, and there goods were sorted towards Padua by water, along the Medoacus Minor. In antiquity it was called Portus Aedro, or Mansio Eurone. The coat of arms of the comune comes from a Roman gravestone that turned up in a dig: on it an eagle grips thunderbolts in its talons, the symbol of the power of Jupiter.
