The name comes from "pieve", a mother church: Plebs Sacci, head parish of the Saccisica, the territory that has looked to this market town between Padua and the lagoon for a thousand years. Piove di Sacco is still its capital with 19,067 residents, a cathedral rebuilt on the ancient parish site and the sanctuary of the Madonna delle Grazie, a pilgrimage goal with its venerated icon.
The position says it all: twenty kilometres from Padua, twenty-five from Venice, and eastward the wetlands sliding toward the southern lagoon, a realm of cycle paths and fishing lodges. Whoever seeks minor Veneto — Thursday markets, osterias without tourist menus — finds it intact here.
