Saint Nicholas, patron of Castagnaro
📅 Every year, on 6 December
Castagnaro celebrates Saint Nicholas on 6 December, in the church dedicated to him.
The name is a tree that is no longer there: Castagnaro comes from the chestnuts that once covered this ground and have now vanished from sight, so much so that a few have recently been replanted in the school garden as a reminder. The village lies at the far south of the Verona country, on the border with the Polesine, and it was the fief of a long line of Veronese families: Dal Verme, Donato, Fracanzani, Rangoni, Sacrati, Trotti, Barbarigo.
Near here, in 1387, the battle of Castagnaro was fought, one of the most famous of the age of the mercenary companies: Giovanni Ordelaffi and Ostasio II da Polenta, fighting for Verona, were defeated by the Englishman John Hawkwood and by Francesco Novello da Carrara, fighting for Padua. Of the farming village there remain instead the Sette Capitei, seven votive shrines raised in seven different spots, and the parish church of San Nicolò, finished in 1844 above an eleventh-century building.
