On 10 August Abano Terme, the main town of the Euganean spas, celebrates Saint Lawrence the martyr: the saint of a church already recorded in 971.
At the foot of the Euganean Hills, Abano has ranked among Europe's thermal capitals since Roman times: its name comes from Aponus, god of the waters that surface here at 87 degrees after a decades-long underground journey from the pre-Alps. The mud matured in its tanks — recognised for therapeutic properties — is the ritual guests have repeated for generations in the spa hotels.
The pedestrian avenue, the gardens and the nearby Monteortone sanctuary compose a town built for slowing down. Around it, Petrarch's Euganean Hills — Arquà and its village are ten minutes away — and Padua a quarter of an hour: wellness with a side of art.
