Teolo

Province: Padua · Region: Veneto · Population: 8,866 · Postal code: 35037

Near the parish church a boundary stone from 141 BC turned up bearing the Latin word titulus, and that is where the name Teolo comes from: the village stood on the edge between the lands of Padua and those of Este. Local tradition holds that Livy was born here, though there is no firm proof; which did not stop the claim from having very concrete consequences.

When Napoleon redrew the districts, it seems that what made Teolo a district seat was a sonnet by the abbot Felice Dianin, recalling precisely the Roman historian. Then in 1862 the Austrians closed the court and the police station and moved the town hall to Treponti, where it still stands: the municipality bears the name of a village it does not sit in. On Monte Lonzina is the abbey of Praglia.
