Rovolon

Province: Padua · Region: Veneto · Population: 4,777 · Postal code: 35030

Rovolon has 4,777 inhabitants in the Euganean hills, and it too is a comune sparso: the town hall is not in Rovolon but at Bastia, down on the plain. Bastia is called that after a bastia, the fortification the Paduans put up in the thirteenth century to defend themselves from the men of Vicenza; the Scaligeri destroyed it, but the name stayed. And the hamlet of Carbonara is called that because charcoal from the Euganean woods was gathered and worked there.

In 970 the bishop of Padua gave these lands to the monks of Santa Giustina: they called them "hard ground" because they could not be cultivated, and it was the Benedictines who reclaimed them and brought in the settlers, for whom they built the first church. In the thirteenth century more than half the territory belonged to a single person, and not a lord: it was Adelmota dei Maltraversi, who according to the inventory of her property owned more than a thousand fields here and about a hundred buildings, including the castle delle Rocche — of which one tower survives today, and that in a bad way. The castle was already completely abandoned by 1373.
