Torreglia

Province: Padua · Region: Veneto · Population: 6,206 · Postal code: 35038

There are two answers about the name, and the municipality has put both of them on its coat of arms: a bull on the left, a tower on the right. The bull stands for an ancient taurilia, the bullfight that legend says Antenor, the mythical founder of Padua, held to thank the gods for his escape from Troy; the tower stands for the medieval Turrilia, that is, the many towers raised in these parts after the fall of the empire, to keep raiders off. A third theory, the tower of Alberto Bibi, treasurer to Ezzelino da Romano, is set aside because the village was already there before him. On the shield there are also three mountains: Rua, Mira and Solone.

On Monte Rua the hermitage of Santa Maria Annunziata was built in 1339 and rebuilt by the Camaldolese in 1537. At Luvigliano, instead, stands the Villa dei Vescovi, which Giovanni Maria Falconetto designed in the sixteenth century and followed until his death, leaving it to be finished by his assistant Andrea da Valle. The local dish is the torresano, the tower pigeon: at Torreglia they stuff it and bake it in the oven, while at Breganze they turn it on the spit, and on that difference neither town will give an inch.
