The square of Crespino is called piazza Fetonte, and there he is on the coat of arms: the son of the Sun who, having lost control of the horses, falls among the waves of the Po. The legend has him come down here, just before the river opens into its delta. The village, for that matter, was not Venetian until 1815 but Ferrarese: it lay in the Transpadana, the part of Ferrara's territory beyond the Po.
In 1805 some fifty workers rose against taxes, wrecked the town hall and destroyed the registers; then the militia was disarmed and the gates opened to the Austrians. Napoleon, on 11 February 1806, signed a punitive decree at the Tuileries: double taxes, and the stick instead of prison. In the end the village was pardoned in exchange for the shooting of a fishmonger.
