They were a single village, on the two banks of a small canal. Then, with the breach of Ficarolo in 1152, the Po began to run through here, and crossing became dangerous: with no ferry, the people on the left bank could not even go to mass any more, and built an oratory of their own. The peace of Bagnolo of 1484 set the border between Venice and Ferrara on the river, and the two villages stayed apart for good: Guarda Veneta on this side, Guarda Ferrarese on the other.
On 22 December 1509, at the Giaron, an islet now within the comune, the Ferrarese guns stopped the Venetian fleet coming up the Po to take Ferrara. Since the flood of 1951 the village has lost half its people, and the embankments of 1957 took away the part of it that stood on the river.
