Goldoni chose it for his "Chioggia Squabbles", and the character hasn't changed: Chioggia is a working-class Venice — herringbone lanes off Corso del Popolo, the Vena canal with its bridges and boats — that lives on real fishing: its fish market is among Italy's most important, and at auction the catch is still sold "by ear", in whispers.
Chioggia's IGP radicchio grows in the gardens between lagoon and sea; Sottomarina, across the bridge, lays out an immensely wide family beach. Venice is an hour by boat: here it costs less, and the dialect is blunter.
