Casier

Province: Treviso · Region: Veneto · Population: 11,018 · Postal code: 31030

The name comes from cheese: Casier is the Latin caseārius, «relating to cheese», and the place must have been known for making it. For the rest, its history is the Sile's. Out of the river bed have come finds of the first millennium before Christ — swords, daggers, helmets, sickles, fibulae and pottery — a sign that the water was already then a route of trade. A document of 710 attests the monastery of San Teonisto, the oldest monastic complex in the Treviso country, and mentions the milling along the Roggia canal, which went on until the early twentieth century. Around the year one thousand the family known as «de Caserio» built a castle-house here to control the traffic on the river.

In the park of villa de Reali there are Roman columns that came from another city. The villa was built in the seventeenth century by baron Berlendis on the remains of a Benedictine abbey, and its porticoed barchessa has arcades on three sides carried by Roman columns brought from the excavations at Altino, where the family owned wide lands; inside the villa there is an archaeological museum with the amphorae, the marble statues, the columns and the funerary stelae that came out of those same excavations. As for the comune, it is a comune sparso: the town hall is not at Casier but in the neighbouring hamlet of Dosson. In its present form it was born on the first of January 1819, from the joining of the two places.
