Casale sul Sile

The castle of Casale had a tunnel that ran under the river. The da Camino, lords of Treviso, used it in their struggle against the Venetians: it stood on the right bank of the Sile and controlled its traffic, and beneath the water ran a passage that for the time was a daring feat. The tunnel later collapsed, but its ruined mouth can still be seen at the foot of the tower; behind it are the dungeons, where outlaws and enemies of Venice ended up. The Carraresi added a second tower, the one still standing: the original fell. In 1418 the podestà of Treviso Guido Canal had the castle restored and turned it into a farmhouse; in the nineteenth century the little that was left of it was destroyed.

The village appears for the first time in a document of 1101 drawn up at Casale Silerii; the «sul Sile» was already in use in the Middle Ages, but became official only in 1868. Beside the little harbour on the river stands the eighteenth-century parish church, and it is worth going in: the ceiling of the central nave was frescoed by Giandomenico Tiepolo, back from Bavaria where he had worked with his father Giambattista and his brother Lorenzo on the residence of a prince-bishop. Outside, along the towpath, the laden barges bound for the lagoon used to pass: sturdy draught animals hauled them with thick ropes, and today that route is the natural park of the river Sile.
