Cordignano was the name of the castle; the village, for centuries, was called San Cassiano del Meschio, and in dialect it still is, San Cassàn del Mésch. The official name, attested in 1138 as Curdiniano, comes from a Latin landowner named Cordo. The river that gives the second name, the Meschio, is so called from the Latin miscere, to mix, because along its course it gathers many streams.

At Ponte della Muda the customs house still stands, a sixteenth-century building with a portico of cross vaults: there you paid, because that was the only point at which the road between Venice and Udine crossed the Meschio. Muda, in Venetian, means precisely toll, and the name has stayed with the place. The municipality climbs from the plain all the way up to the Cansiglio plateau.
