Colle Umberto

Province: Treviso · Region: Veneto · Population: 5,177 · Postal code: 31014

Colle Umberto has 5,177 inhabitants on two morainic hills between Conegliano and Vittorio Veneto, in prosecco country. Until 1867 it was called simply Colle: the new name came after a visit by king Umberto I. On the higher hill, where the town hall now stands, rose the abbey of San Pietro in Colle, held by the Benedictines of Pomposa; reduced to a commendam, it counted among its commendatory abbots cardinal Carlo Borromeo.

In the frazione of San Martino was born Ottavio Bottecchia, the first Italian to win the Tour de France. A bricklayer and a timber carter, a professional only at twenty-seven, in 1924 he wore the yellow jersey from the first stage to the last — nobody had ever managed it — and the following year he won the race again. In June 1927 he was found dying on a road in Friuli where he used to train, and he died twelve days later; he lies in the small cemetery of San Martino.
