Cappella Maggiore

Province: Treviso · Region: Veneto · Population: 4,677 · Postal code: 31012

Cappella Maggiore has 4,677 inhabitants at the foot of the Cansiglio forest, and it has its name from a chapel that is still standing: the little church of the Mattarella, dedicated to the Holy Trinity, a building of Lombard date whose interior is almost entirely frescoed. Up on the hills, instead, stands the Castelletto, a fortification rebuilt in the tenth century on an older structure to defend against the invasions coming from the north.

The parish church of the main village, dedicated to Saint Mary Magdalene, has an oddity you notice at once: two façades, on two adjacent sides. It is neoclassical, but it grew in the nineteenth century out of a fifteenth-century building. The one at Anzano, on the other hand, is of 1771 and keeps an altarpiece by Francesco da Milano from the early sixteenth century. In the comune's territory there are nine Venetian villas, nearly all of them of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
