Crocetta del Montello

Province: Treviso · Region: Veneto · Population: 6,029 · Postal code: 31035

This town was born of an administrative decision. La Crocetta was a modest patch of countryside dependent on Nogarè, and the name means simply a small crossing of roads; when in 1902 Ciano and Nogarè joined to form an independent municipality, it was decided to put the town hall right there, halfway between the two villages, so as to wrong neither. Around the town hall the little town then grew that today gives the municipality its name. The Montello, the modest ridge that completes that name, rises three hundred and seventy-one metres above the plain of the Piave.

The area was actively partisan, and it paid for it. On 26 August 1944 the Germans burned an inn in the village in reprisal and shot six partisans not far off, taken from the prison at Montebelluna; four days later, during a sweep of the hamlet of Ciano, they seized and hanged two civilians. At Crocetta was the seat of the Court of Auditors of the Italian Social Republic, guarded by the Tenth MAS Flotilla: on 2 January 1945 it was the men of that unit who, having tortured them first, shot five partisans by the cemetery of Ciano. Villa Pontello, which from the nineteen-twenties had been a girls' orphanage, has been since 1979 the museum of the Great War.
