The Conversion of Saint Paul, patron of Villa Barbaro
📅 Every year, on 25 January
Maser celebrates the Conversion of Saint Paul on 25 January.
Maser has 4,962 inhabitants between the plain and the hills of Asolo, and its name does not promise well: it comes from the Latin maceries, rubble, ruins, and marked a piece of land that had slipped. On that land, between 1554 and 1560, Andrea Palladio built for the brothers Daniele and Marcantonio Barbaro the villa that carries their name: one of his masterpieces, and the reason the town is known around the world.
Before the Barbaro these lands belonged to the Ezzelini, and their properties were counted one by one after the family's final defeat in 1260. The parish church of San Paolo keeps a Martyrdom of Saint Catherine from the school of Paolo Veronese and a Virgin and Child by Leandro da Ponte. The war memorial, unveiled in 1923 and carved by Angelo Rossetto, a sculptor from Maser, is made of two spires of rock — the Alps, the frontier — and of a bronze woman, the Fatherland, looking down at a fallen son sculpted at her feet.
