Giavera del Montello

Province: Treviso · Region: Veneto · Population: 5,144 · Postal code: 31040

Giavera del Montello has 5,144 inhabitants on the southern flank of the Montello hill, and takes its name from the Giavera stream, perhaps from the Latin glaber, «smooth». In the cave of the Bo' de Pavei stone tools and a human skeleton forty thousand years old have been found. A fief of the Collalto around 990, the territory later passed to the Serenissima: from the Montello woods came the oaks that supplied the Arsenal of Venice.

In June 1918 the Piave front ran through here. The Battle of the Solstice raged in the Valle dei Morti, at Santi Angeli, and at the western end of the Linea della Corda casa Serena withstood the Austrian impact of the first days. On 15 June a shell smashed the roof of the church of the Assunta at Cusignana, destroying Canal's fresco; the following year the ceiling was rebuilt in the shape of an upturned ship's keel. Beside the municipal cemetery, in 1921, the British military cemetery was completed.
