Nervesa della Battaglia

From 1470 the wood of the Montello was a reserve of the Venetian Republic: the timber went to the Arsenal, and anyone stealing it faced the harshest penalties. With the unification of Italy the protection fell away, and the Bertolini law of 1892 divided the wood into plots to be given to the poorest families. It went badly: the felling was uncontrolled, the acid and karstic ground did not yield what had been hoped, and the people stayed desperately poor. They were called bisnent, twice nothing.

In the abbey of Sant'Eustachio, founded by the Collalto on the slopes of the hill, Giovanni Della Casa wrote the Galateo. Of the abbey only ruins are left today: what time had not done the war did, because in June 1918 Nervesa was levelled in the battle of the solstice. The words della Battaglia were added under Fascism, and on the Montello stands one of the great ossuaries of the Italian fallen.
