Susegana had two castles and lost them both in the same war, hit by Italian guns. The first, the castle of Collalto, is attested from 1138; the second, that of San Salvatore, was begun in 1323 by Rambaldo VIII of Collalto on the hill that the comune of Treviso had ceded to the counts in 1245, and with its double ring of walls it came to cover thirty-two thousand square metres. After the rout of Caporetto the front stopped on the Piave and the hills were left to the Austrians: between 1917 and 1918 the Italian artillery shelled the castles until they were destroyed, and with them many of the works of art they held were lost. In the locality of Sant'Anna the Austro-Hungarians dug a cave into the front line and put a hospital in it.

The village's name, for some, comes from the Roman owner of a plot of land, a Sosus or Sosius; others propose a Germanic origin, from «sig», victory or fortress. Through here ran the via Claudia Augusta and the road between Oderzo, Feltre and Trento, which crossed where the Soligo enters the Piave, and there was a ford: the place was called Marcadelli, then Mercadelli, and today Mercatelli — the name of the trading that went on at the river crossing. The modern comune was born in 1806 as the comune of San Salvador and only later took the name of the village chosen as its seat.
