San Polo di Piave

Province: Treviso · Region: Veneto · Population: 4,929 · Postal code: 31020

San Polo di Piave has 4,929 inhabitants in the Treviso plain, and the name is simply Saint Paul said in Venetian. When the Lombards destroyed Oderzo, in 667, the territory was divided between the bishops of Treviso and Ceneda, but the pieve of San Polo remained an island: it depended on the patriarch of Aquileia, because it lay on the road the patriarch took to reach Pavia, capital of the Lombard kingdom, and from here one could reach a ford on the Piave and then the via Postumia.

In the little church of San Giorgio, a fifteenth-century devotional chapel, Giovanni di Francia frescoed a Last Supper in which on the table, beside the bread and the wine, there are crayfish and river fish: it is a medieval pictorial tradition of these lands. The fief, given in 1452 to the condottiero Cristoforo da Tolentino and then for three centuries to the counts Gabrieli, survived as a great landed estate until yesterday: only on 26 June 1971 was it broken up and divided among the former sharecroppers.
