Ormelle

Province: Treviso · Region: Veneto · Population: 4,464 · Postal code: 31024

Ormelle has 4,464 inhabitants in the Treviso plain, between Oderzo and the Piave, and it is a comune made of three villages whose names carry three different stories. Ormelle comes from the elm, the tree that once filled this area: in Venetian the ormèe are still the vessels for wine made from the wood of young elms. Roncadelle comes from the Latin runcare, to cut trees with a billhook, and it was exactly that, a wood cleared to make fields. Tempio, on the other hand, owes its name to the Knights Templar, who owned it in the twelfth century and built their church there; in 1312, once the order was dissolved, the Knights Hospitaller took over.

The town's coat of arms is a map of all this: the red ground stands for raboso, the wine of these lands; the blue band is the Piave, on which Roncadelle stands; the elm is the main village; the white cross of the Knights of Malta is Tempio; and the three stars are the three villages. The history, on the other hand, is that of a place that always found itself in the middle: laid waste in 1368 by the troops of emperor Charles IV and in 1411 by those of Sigismund, and then, after Caporetto, left on the Piave line, with the villages razed by the fighting and the people evacuated.
