Saint Stephen, patron with Saint Valentine and Saint Blaise
📅 Every year, on 26 December, with co-patrons Saint Valentine and Saint Blaise
San Stino di Livenza celebrates its patrons, Saint Stephen, Saint Valentine and Saint Blaise, on 26 December.
For more than a century this village's name was got wrong by a rule of grammar. It is called San Stino after Saint Stephen the protomartyr, and as «San Steno» it appears for the first time in a bull of pope Urban III of 15 March 1186; «San Stin» is on a seventeenth-century map and in the comune's own papers. Then, after 1871, someone applied the rule by which «san» becomes «santo» before an impure s, and in the 1886 edition of the Dictionary of the Comuni of the Kingdom of Italy «Santo Stino» appeared. It took a hundred and twenty-five years to put right: on 10 November 2011 the council passed a formal act establishing, once and for all, that the name is San Stino di Livenza.
The reclaimed countryside south of the village is called the Seven Sisters, and the sisters really existed: in 1687 the local landowner divided the land among his seven daughters, and their names have been found on a map in the Venetian state archives, laid out from east to west — Brigida, Bernardina, Ellena, Chiara, Maria, Marina and another Marina. Before all this, the castle of San Stino had been border country between Venice and the patriarchate of Aquileia: in 1387 it was entrusted to the archdeacon of Gorizia, Simone de' Gavardi, who raided from it as far as burning Caorle; the following year the Venetians turned up and burned the castle.
