Campagna Lupia

Province: Venice · Region: Veneto · Population: 6,936 · Postal code: 30010

Until 1867 the village was called simply Campagna; then a royal decree added Lupia, and the reason is on the coat of arms, where there is a golden she-wolf. Lupia is said to be the Italian form of Lova, which in Venetian means precisely she-wolf: this was the farmland of Lova. Another explanation links it to the Latin alluvies, the flood, and would point to the sandy ground where a river spreads out.

Before the Romans there was a forest here: Livy, who was from Padua, called it una et obscura silva glandaria, a vast and dark oak wood. The Romans cut it down and brought the higher ground under the plough, but without centuriation, because the rest was marsh. Towards the sea that marsh has remained: it is the fishing valleys of the lagoon, Serraglia, Contarina, Zappa, Figheri, and in one of them, valle Averto, there is now a WWF reserve.
