Cavallino-Treporti

Province: Venice · Region: Veneto · Population: 13,162 · Postal code: 30013

Cavallino-Treporti is a comune that grows by itself. In 1888 the outer breakwater was built, which stops the sand: since then the peninsula has almost doubled its surface, advancing by about 150 metres every ten years. Where the sea reached in 1888 there is now Punta Sabbioni, and the sea is two kilometres further out; by 2016 little more than a hundred metres were left before the land would reach the light at the end of the breakwater. All this new land is state property and classed as a military zone, so nothing can be built on it: that is why there are only campsites there, on plots granted in concession. One of those plots was assigned by the army to the Italian Communist Party, and the campsite is called Primo Maggio, the First of May.

The comune, on the other hand, was born of a referendum. Until 1999 this was district 9 of Venice; on 13 December 1998 the inhabitants voted to leave, and the regional law obliged them. Before that they had depended on Burano, until Burano too was absorbed by Venice. The two names come one from horses and the other from ports: Cavallino echoes Equilium, the ancient Jesolo, from the Venetic word meaning «horse pasture», while Treporti recalls three port-canals still recognisable in the layout of the waters. And on the beach, since 2005, they hold Beach on Fire: thirteen kilometres of fireworks, in the Guinness records as the longest firework display in the world.
