Quarto d'Altino

Province: Venice · Region: Veneto · Population: 8,199 · Postal code: 30020

The name is a measurement: ad quartum, at the fourth mile from Altinum. Altinum was a Roman municipium and a port on the lagoon; when it declined, between destruction and the spreading marshes, its people left for the estuary and founded Torcello, Murano, Burano and the first nucleus of what would become Venice. The ruins left behind served as a stone quarry.

The Christian village grew around a chapel of Saint Michael the Archangel and from 1177 belonged to the diocese of Torcello. Then, between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, it moved further east, where the railway and the bridge over the Sile passed, and the old settlement was left with an adjective: San Michele Vecchio, old San Michele. The archaeological museum of Altino dates from 1960.
