Bardolino

Province: Verona · Region: Veneto · Population: 6,714 · Postal code: 37011

The name of Bardolino appears for the first time in 807, in a diploma by which king Pepin of Italy gave to the abbey of San Zeno in Verona the church of San Zenone situated, the document says, in Bardolino with all its appurtenances. That church is still standing, and it is worth the journey: it dates from the middle of the ninth century and is one of the very few Carolingian buildings left in Italy. Not far off is the monastery of San Colombano, founded by monks who came from the abbey of Bobbio and later an independent priory, and the pieve of Santa Maria, rebuilt in the twelfth century above an early Christian church that in turn stood on a pagan temple.

Between 856 and 859 the lake villages fought Verona and lost. The battle is recalled by a canvas by Felice Brusasorzi devoted to the victory of the Veronese over the people of the lake, which still hangs in the council chamber of Verona's town hall: the losers' defeat on the winners' wall. Among the Roman finds made here and now in Verona's lapidary museum there is instead a sepulchral cippus that a man had raised to himself while he was still alive. Of the twentieth century what remains is casa Ottolenghi, built by Carlo Scarpa between 1974 and 1978.
