Cavaion Veronese

Province: Verona · Region: Veneto · Population: 5,471 · Postal code: 37010

The name of the village appears in the earliest documents as Caput leonis and as Capalionis, that is lion's head, perhaps to indicate a fortified place: the two letters C on the municipal coat of arms are the initials of Comunitas Capalionis. In Venetian, however, cavajon means something quite different, being the name of a kind of haystack used in threshing. Human presence here is very old — there are palaeolithic remains and a Bronze Age settlement, whose finds are in the archaeological museum in the town hall — and it passes through contacts with the Etruscans in the seventh century before Christ, subjection to the Celts in the fourth and Roman occupation around the first. In 1277 Cavaion passed to the Scaligeri, who held it for more than a century, and from 1405 to the Republic of Venice; in the seventeen-hundreds it suffered thefts and damage from the passage of Spanish, German and French troops, and with the end of the Serenissima it fell to Austria, until the annexation to the Kingdom of Italy in 1866.

From the two heights of Monte San Michele and Monte Ceriel one enjoys one of the best views over Lake Garda, and the comune has two different climates: on the slopes facing south and towards the lake it is Mediterranean, with olive groves and small ranges of temperature; on those facing north and on the right bank of the Adige it is humid temperate, with muggy summers and harsh winters. The difference shows in what grows: on one side the olive — Cavaion is the seat of the consortium for the protection of Garda DOP extra virgin olive oil — on the other Bardolino wine, kiwis, peaches and cherries. In the third week of May the asparagus festival is held, with the competitions for the golden white asparagus of Cavaion and for the green one of Verona. The town, finally, has had a small television fame: since 17 January 2012 the comedian Leonardo Manera has brought to Zelig the character of Battista, an imaginary entrepreneur from Cavaion Veronese, who maintains that Cavaion Veronese is in the province of Cavaion.
