Bosco Chiesanuova

Province: Verona · Region: Veneto · Population: 3,546 · Postal code: 37021

The village stands at one thousand one hundred and six metres, on the ridge between two deep canyons, and it is the second highest municipal seat in the province. The plateau has been frequented since the Palaeolithic, and not by chance: Lessinia supplied flint to half of Europe. In the Middle Ages the area belonged to three abbeys — Bobbio, San Zeno and Santa Maria in Organo — and then two of the Cimbrian communities of the Thirteen Communes settled here, Frizzolana, which is today's main village, and Valdiporro. Cimbrian survives in the names of the hamlets: Porretal, Tander, Scioster, Ghert, Grietz. People lived on charcoal.

With these communities the lords negotiated rather than commanded: in 1326 Cangrande della Scala exempted Frizzolana from certain taxes in exchange for a commitment to guard the borders. Until about 1650 the municipality was run by a Massaro flanked by four councillors, one from each hamlet, and among those hamlets was Erbezzo, which then had no autonomy of its own. It was Napoleon who closed all this down, abolishing the independent mountain communities; the Austrians, instead of restoring them, treated them as state property and sold them to private buyers. Something survives at Podestaria, which carries the name of the podestà who once judged boundary disputes at the August cattle fair: the fair still rewards the best beasts with cioche, the cowbells.

Saint Vitalis and the pilgrimage for rain

📅 Every year, on 29 January; a 19th-century pilgrimage for the drought

Bosco Chiesanuova celebrates Saint Vitalis on 29 January. It is said that in the first half of the 19th century, during a severe drought, the townspeople made a pilgrimage to San Vitale di Roverè Veronese to pray for rain, which arrived upon their return.
