Selva di Progno

Province: Verona · Region: Veneto · Population: 934 · Postal code: 37030

At Giazza, a hamlet of this municipality, Cimbrian is still spoken, which here they call tauc': it is a High German language, brought by Bavarian and Tyrolean settlers who at the end of the twelfth century, by a bishop's concession, were allowed to colonise these mountains. The municipality has a Cimbrian name too, Brunghe, while the Italian one describes the landscape: progno comes from the Latin pronus, sloping, and around here it means a mountain stream.

On the first Sunday of July the plague vow is discharged: a procession with the statue of the Madonna that the people here make together with those of Velo Veronese, because the vow was taken jointly during an epidemic and has bound two of the Thirteen Communes ever since. The first Sunday of October brings instead the feast of the derlo, the wooden basket used to carry firewood on one's back, which by now few people know how to make. Above the village stretches the state forest of Giazza, grown from a replanting and divided among three provinces.
